Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero has joined Manchester United on a free transfer after seeing out his contract with Sampdoria.
The 28-year-old has signed a three-year contract with an option to extend for a further one year.
“I am absolutely delighted to join Manchester United. To play for the biggest club in the world is a dream come true for me,” the goalkeeper who began his career with Racing Santander in Argentina said.
“Louis van Gaal is a fantastic manager and I cannot wait to get started on this new and exciting challenge in my career.”
Romero has been capped 62 times at full international level and was among the ‘La Albiceleste’ squad which finished runners-up to Germany at the 2014 Fifa World Cup and Chile at more recently the 2015 Copa America.
He becomes coach Louis van Gaal’s fifth signing of the summer, following the arrival of Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Morgan Schneiderling and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Louis van Gaal said: “Sergio is a very talented goalkeeper. He was a young keeper during my time at AZ Alkmaar and I am delighted he is joining Manchester United. He had a fantastic World Cup last summer in Brazil, although that is something I have put to the back of my mind! He will be a great addition to the team and I am looking forward to working with him once again.”
Van Gaal managed Romero at his former club AZ Alkmaar. The new boy has now joined his team-mates in San Jose, Carlifornia, where they prepare for Friday’s friendly against PSG.
