South Korea’s Chung Wants to Be Fifa’s Next President

South Korea’s Chung Moong-joon has declared intention to succeed Sepp Blatter as Fifa’s next president.

Chung is a former vice-president of world football’s governing body and the major shareholder of automotive manufacturers Hyundai.

He told the BBC’s World Football programme he wants to replace the 79-year-old Swiss and that rival Michel Platini was not the right man for Fifa.

“If I get elected, my job is not to enjoy the luxury of the office. My job is to change it,” he added.

“It will be very difficult for Mr. Platini to have any meaningful reforms. Mr. Platini enjoys institutional support from the current structure of Fifa. Mr. Platini is very much a product of the current system.”

Platini announced he will be candidate for Fifa presidency on Wednesday and has not be spared of criticisms from oppositions.

Candidates have until 26 October to declare to run in the election which comes up on 26 February.

The English Football Association has confirmed it will back Uefa president Platini’s bid for election.

Chung, who lost his Fifa vice-presidency in 2010 to Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein of Jordan, believes he has a “good chance” of winning the election.

“It is time that Fifa had a non-European leadership,” he said.

“FIFA became a closed organisation for president Blatter, his associates and his cronies and I want to change that.”

Blatter has occupied football’s highest position since 1998 and was re-elected for a fifth term on 29 May, but announced he will stand down four days later in the wake of the biggest scandal in the history of world football.

Seven high-ranking football officials were arrested at at a five-star hotel in Zurich as part of a U.S. investigation into allegations of fraud at football’s governing level Fifa. Two other ex-Fifa executives were also indicted in the U.S. investigation, including five marketing associates.

A separate probe of Fifa’s decision to award the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments to Russia and Qatar by Swiss authorities is also ongoing.

Head of Liberia FA, Musa Bility, has already declared his candidacy. Bility has also said Platini’s candidacy is unacceptable and that world football’s top job needed to be occupied by non-European.

Former Brazilian international Zico and ex-France winger David Ginola are other outsiders who have also said they will contest for Fifa presidency.

Prince Ali bin al-Hussein, who was beaten by Blatter in May’s congress, is also likely to confirm his candidacy.

Israel Passes Law That Allows For Force-feeding Of Prisoners

The Israeli parliament has passed a law allowing the force-feeding of prisoners on hunger strike. Under the law, force-feeding an inmate will need to be approved by a judge. Palestinians held in Israeli jails have used hunger strikes to protest against the policy of detention without charge or trial. BBC reports:

The Israeli Medical Association condemned the law, saying force-feeding was tantamount to torture, and urged doctors not to participate. The association said it would petition the High Court of Justice against the law, according to Israeli radio. The law passed by a narrow margin of 46 votes to 40.

Internal Security Minister Gilad Erden said the measure was necessary as “hunger strikes of terrorists in prison have become a tool to pressure and threaten the state of Israel to release terrorists”. Mr Erden’s office said the law was initiated following prolonged hunger strikes by prisoners in 2012 in protest at detention without charge.

Earlier this month Israel freed Palestinian prisoner Khader Adnan, an Islamic Jihad activist, who was on hunger strike for 56 days. Mr Adnan called the new law “Israeli bankruptcy in dealing with Palestinian prisoners who are on hunger strikes”. He had been held for more than a year without charge and his hunger strike had left him in a critical condition.

Calais Migrant Crisis: Cameron Warns Britain Is ‘No Safe Haven’

Britain will not become a “safe haven” for migrants in Calais, David Cameron has warned, after hundreds continued their attempts to reach the UK. The prime minister warned illegal immigrants would be removed from the UK, as migrants told the BBC they remained determined to reach Britain.

According to the BBC, Mr Cameron was speaking after people gathered for a third night at fencing at the Channel Tunnel freight terminal. Over 3,500 attempts have been made this week to get into the tunnel terminal.

Several hundred migrants were escorted away from the terminal by French police on Wednesday night – the third night of large-scale attempts to storm the terminal. As night fell, the road towards the Channel Tunnel started to come alive. Groups of 10 or 12 migrants, moving steadily along the darkened highway, jackets pulled close, hoods up.

After a day of discussion in Paris and London over how to secure the tunnel, and fresh deployments of riot police, the determination of Calais’ migrants seems unchanged.

Irish Town Holds Sheep Dung Spitting Competition

Visitors at the 37th annual Lady of the Lake Festival in Irvinestown, Northern Ireland’s Fermanagh county, were in for a stinky surprise – a sheep dung spitting competition that literally left participants with a bad taste in their mouth.

Oddity Central reports that festival organizers took to Facebook to find volunteers to take part in the bizarre contest. The winner was promised £100($155). 44 people finally signed up, joining Mayor JoeMahon on a dung spitting spree.

“I had the idea after a couple of Smithwicks,” Mahon said. “I didn’t know an awful lot about sheep dung but I had to go and collect the poo from a local farmer and then I left it in the boot of the car. My wife took the car out shopping and when she opened the boot she was nearly knocked out by the smell.” She then threatened to divorce him!

Taliban Elects New Leader After Mullah Omar’s Death

The Taliban has elected Mullah Akhtar Mansoor as its new leader, Taliban sources have told Al Jazeera, as the group confirmed the death of their Mullah Omar. The election, which was reported on Thursday, has not been officially confirmed by the Taliban, but a commander present at the meeting to elect Mansoor also confirmed the report to Reuters news agency:

Reports said the election was held in Pakistan’s city of Quetta.  Mansoor will be only the second leader the Taliban have had since Omar, an elusive figure rarely seen in public who founded the group in the 1990s.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Yehia Ghanem, a journalist who covered Afghanistan for years, said Mansoor is a “key figure” in the Taliban organisation, serving as the governor of Kandahar before the American invasion. “He actually led many intelligence operations, very important and major ones, in which he beat the biggest intelligence apparatus in the world,” Ghanem said.

The Afghan government said on Wednesday that Taliban leader Omar died more than two years ago, in a hospital in Karachi. Following the announcement, a second round of peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government have been postponed.

81-Year-Old Man Caught Having s*x With Plant On The Street

An elderly man was arrested on a charge of public indecency after being seen having s*x with a plant on the street, police in Connecticut said. Stratford police said that they have arrested 81-year-old Wallace Berg on Monday, after being accused of standing unclad in the street and having s*x with a plant.

According to the police investigation, a neighbor saw Berg standing unclad across his home and decided to take video of him. The neighbor managed to record Berg committing an indecent act with the plant. The neighbor then went to confront Berg, after which he covered himself with a grill cover, apologized and went home.

After police saw the video, Berg was charged with public indecency and breach of the peace. He was booked into jail, and his bail was set at $10,000.

Sleeping Woman Rolls Over In Bed, Falls Out From Third Floor Window

A woman was seriously injured after falling out from a third floor window during her sleep, according to court documents in Oregon. Now, 23-year-old Shelbi Macholz has filed a $230,000 lawsuit against the management company of her apartment, claiming that they failed to install window guards, which would have prevented her fall.

According to Scoop, Macholz named Principle Property Management, in her lawsuit filed on Monday at the Lane County Circuit Court. Macholz suffered fractures to her pelvis and lower back. According to the lawsuit, Macholz fell from the apartment around 5:00 a.m. She was taken to the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center and then to the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center for treatments.

She was given painkillers, blood clotting agents and other drugs. Macholz wants $80,000 for medical expenses and $150,000 for pain, suffering and interference with the ability to enjoy life.

US To Deliver F-16 Aircraft To Egypt

The United States will deliver eight F-16 Block 52 aircraft to Egypt within the next two days, the US embassy in Cairo said in a statement, part of a military package that had been unfrozen earlier this year. The statement released on Thursday said Washington would deliver four more F-16s to Egypt this autumn. Aljazeera has more:

Despite US lawmakers’ concerns that Egypt is lagging on democratic reforms, Egypt remains one of Washington’s closest security allies in the region.Relations had cooled after former President Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood was overthrown by the military in 2013 after mass protests against his rule.

However, ties with former general Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who was later elected as president, have steadily improved. In late March, US President Barack Obama lifted a hold on a supply of arms to Cairo, authorising deliveries of US weapons valued at more than $1.3bn.

At the time he directed the release of 12 Lockheed Martin F-16 aircraft, 20 Boeing Harpoon missiles, and up to 125 M1A1 Abrams tank kits made by General Dynamics. Last month, Washington delivered two navy vessels to Egypt, doubling Cairo’s total fleet of Fast Missile Craft to four.

Iraqi Government Denies UN Torture Allegations

The Iraqi government has denied allegations that it tortures prisoners, after Iraqi officials were questioned by a UN committee investigating suspected human rights abuses in the country’s jails. Brigadier General Saad Maan, Iraq’s interior ministry spokesman, said reports by Human Rights Watch (HRW) and other groups about Iraq lack the right facts. Aljazeera reports:

Maan said that Iraq has a strong judicial system in place and that all prisoners receive due process.  Iraqi officials were challenged on Wednesday to name a single person the country had jailed for torture by the UN Committee against Torture investigating suspected human rights abuses in a justice system that it said had “gone astray”.

“Is there anyone in Iraq in prison, sentenced for torturing another human being? Is there one person? Five? Ten?” the chairman of committee, Claudio Grossman, asked the Iraqi delegation.

Another committee member, Alessio Bruni, said Iraq’s criminal law had no adequate definition of torture, so it could not adequately prosecute it. Other questions included whether Iraq has secret detention facilities, whether anybody had been compensated for being tortured, and how to explain trials that lasted a few minutes and led to the death penalty.

Retired Indian Man Takes Prescription Medicine From The Rich, Gives It To The Poor

Omkarnath, a retired blood-bank technician from New Delhi, is a modern-day medical Robin Hood. For the past three years, the 79-year-old has been collecting unused prescription drugs from the wealthy and distributing them among the less fortunate. His efforts have earned him the nickname ‘Medicine Baba’.Scoop has more:

‘Baba’ is a term used in India to describe a wise, elderly man. New Delhi’s very own Medicine Baba walks over seven kilometers each day, combing the city and stopping at almost every door, asking for unused medicines. He’s also set up dozens of collection boxes in private clinics around the city, where people can make donations. According to Omkarnath, “Every bungalow in Delhi has extra medicines, but they are throwing them in their dustbins.” But the best neighborhoods, he insists, are the middle-class and lower middle-class ones. “One morning, I got a strip of anti-cancer medication worth 35,000 rupees ($545),” he recalled.

Omkarnath was inspired to start his unique mission after he witnessed a few construction workers getting badly injured. He accompanied the men to government hospitals, but they were refused treatment and asked to find other sources for the necessary medication. That’s when he got the idea to take from the rich and distribute to the poor. Although he’s not a trained pharmacist, he does not supply a drug unless he sees a doctor’s prescription. But he doesn’t charge a penny for his service. He estimates that he gives out medication worth about $9,000 per month!

Total Failure: Caitlyn Jenner’s ‘I Am Cait’ Reality Show Premiere Receives Very Low Ratings

A lot of  people would be shocked to know that after all the hype surrounding Caitlyn Jenner, the premiere of his reality show “I Am Cait” was shadowed by very low ratings.

It has been revealed that E! Reality show “I Am Cait” which follows the world’s most famous transgender person Caitlyn ‘Bruce’ Jenner as he navigates his new life as a woman and tries to become the face of the transgender community drew in 2.7million viewers according to ratings data released today.

It would look like a good rating, but this is actually a massive drop compared to the 17 million people who watched Bruce Jenner come out as a transgender woman in the Diane Sawyer interview.

It’s also really low compared to  the 8 million viewers who tuned in to watch Caitlyn collect the Arthur Ashe award for bravery at the ESPYs two weeks ago.

Judging from the tweets from many people who watched the show said it was boring and 2.7 mill is very low considering all the hype surrounding Caitlyn and this show.

Among those 2.73 million viewers, more than half (1.5 million) were adults 18-49 and with a total of four airings across the night, the show grossed a measly  6.2 million viewers.

Empire Star, Terrence Howard Sued By Ex-wife For Alleged Kicking And Strangling Her

Lovers of the famous American TV show, Empire, would be concerned as one of the stars, Terrence Howard has been accused by his ex-wife of kicking and trying to strangle her while they were vacationing in Costa Rica.

According to the civil complaint filed by Michelle Howard, she claims that Terrence kicked, strangled and threatened her on July 29, 2013 at a rental house the couple was staying at in Costa Rica.

“[The Defendant] followed Plaintiff into the restroom of the rental house and punched her on the left side of her face,” reads the complaint filed by Howard. “Defendant also grabbed Plaintiff by her neck and pushed her against the bathroom wall and strangled her for several seconds.”

Michelle Howard alleges that when she tried to escape, Terrence Howard’s son-in-law, Billy intervened by trying to pull the actor’s hands from his wife’s neck.

“While Billy tried to pry Defendant’s hands from Plaintiff’s neck, Defendant whispered to Plaintiff, ‘Remember what I told you in Bora Bora? That is what I’m gonna do,’ referring to a prior instance where Defendant told Plaintiff that her body would never leave the island,” the complaint continues. “Plaintiff interpreted the reference to mean that Defendant was going to kill her.”

Howard He was arrested  on charges of assaulting his then-wife Lori McCommas, and in Michelle’s 2011 divorce papers she claimed he repeatedly threatened and hit her throughout their marriage.

Howard and executives for Fox, which airs Empire, were questioned about the accusations at the Television Critics Association’s winter tour in January.

Fox TV group chairs Dana Walden and Gary Newman claimed they weren’t aware of the accusations until December 2014, when they were already in business with him.

“A lot of the things I did were the product of not knowing how to deal with frustration, not knowing who Terrence Howard is,” said the actor. “I’ve grown so much from anything that’s happened in the past.”
